misc baseball bats and gloves

Just had to send out congratulations to my favorite Muppetfaced Venezuelan (that would be Bobby Abreu) on being signed for two more years by the Angels.  There's a part of me that would have loved to see him in Boston if Jason Bay were not to return, but I also know that many Red Sox fans wouldn't be happy with that simply because he spent 2-1/2 years in pinstripes, so maybe it's for the best.

Based on all I've ever heard about Bobby, he's apparently a real student of the game, an excellent teacher, and oh yes, he's quite intelligent to boot.  A couple more years of being a role model for his teammates in Anaheim and he'll be 37 (turning 38 during Spring Training the following season), at which time I can absolutely see him moving into a coaching role.

Some Bobby trivia: Very early on, he played single-A ball right here in Asheville, I believe in 1992.  I went to plenty of Asheville Tourists games back then, and I'm pretty sure I remember him, mainly because I found his last name unusual.  I read a story some years ago about his season in Asheville.  It mentioned that the McCormick Field announcer thought his last name was "uh-BROO" and enjoyed saying it when he came up to bat, because it was fun to hear the "OO" echo against the ridges that surround the ballpark.  The story went on to say that at that point Bobby spoke virtually no English, so the season was nearly over before he was able to tell the announcer how his name was actually pronounced.   :D

misc baseball the greatest game

I'm not and have never been the hatin' kind when it comes to being a baseball fan.  I already e-mailed my NYY fan cousins to congratulate them, and I'm hereby extending that congratulations to all the Yankees fans on my f-list.  I really was hoping for a Phillies miracle last night but alas, Matsui got in the way.  I must say, his homely self was very impressive.  I missed the last couple of innings because I was too tired to stay awake, but I did wake up during the postgame for just long enough to realize it was all over.  And now baseball is put to bed for the winter, and I am sad, but of course there'll be plenty of hot stove action and other related news to keep all of us going until Truck Day.  And doG knows I have enough other stuff to keep me busy anyway.

misc baseball the greatest game

This courtesy of my cousin Danielle, who sent it to me, of her mom all bundled up during Game 2 last night (and she stayed for all 13 innings despite living a ways out on Long Island -- there's no telling what time she actually got home).

I'm squeaky clean here after a shower following 2-1/2 hours of kamikaze decluttering that cleared so much space that I think Raye will be very surprised when she comes here for a session on Wednesday.  A couple of boxes of junk are now totally gone to the garbage and the back seat of my car is full of stuff to take to Goodwill tomorrow, including a chair, a mirror, a magazine rack, a box of clothes, and a box of knickknacks.  I tossed the World War II vintage Army cot that my dad had passed on to me for festival use (and which I had never used).  I was sort of sad to do that, but it's too contaminated with mold and dust to give to a surplus store.

Late in the afternoon I found yet another box of books, most of which will probably get gone because they're no longer of interest to me (from a quick glance through them), but that's for another time, because right now I have to eat, do dishes, and deal with e-mails and such.  I'll be back later to answer comments from my earlier entry.

I dunno...

misc question everything

Just watched the latest press conference related to the "balloon boy" incident, and I've got to say, I think the authorities are overreacting a bit.  And no, that's not the cop-hater in me talking.  I was able to look at the individuals as they spoke without feeling revulsion or anger.  I just listened and tried to be objective, and after hearing everything they said, it baffles me that they want to press felony charges on these folks.  I do feel that they need to make restitution for leading the authorities and media on a wild goose chase, certainly, but "contributing to the delinquency of a minor" and a boatload of other potential charges?  You've got to be kidding me.  What do my readers think about this whole thing?  I'm just curious.

misc question everything

i'm going to do something really uncharacteristic here -- i'm not going to bother with caps and i'm just going to let the words flow, because i haven't posted all week and i just want to get this written while it's fresh on my mind, after which i will change into my pjs and sit on the bed and eat cannned vegan lentil soup (or maybe i'll make black bean and corn tacos, i dunno) and watch the cardinals game.  atm they're up 1-0 (thanks for the hr, holliday!), and they really need to win after losing last night.  i watched the game in bed and snuggled down into the pillows a little after 11 because i was so tired.  woke up a couple of hours later to find julio at the plate (spooky timing, yes?), so i watched him as well as albert, then turned off the tv and went back to sleep.

By the door of The Room of Shame, waiting to be donated to a used bookstore as soon as I finish filling it, is a large box of old books, mostly paperbacks, some of which I picked up secondhand during and after college.  They were a hoot to look through, just an amazing jumble of stuff from exposes of 1960s communes to lurid true crime to best-selling novels of their time to outdated self-help books.  I cleared two shelves of my bookcase and only kept 10 books, which means I'm actually making progress at GETTING RID OF STUFF, which is the whole point of this project, after all.

I ran a box fan backwards in the window back there for several hours today, with a second window open to create a crossdraft, so some of the nasty air is gone.  If I keep on doing that, alternating with the dehumidifier, the air will be fit to breathe back there relatively soon.  I can tell a difference already, although I'm still wearing my "deep sea diver" mask while working in there.

Also house related, I had another explosive ant swarm on the door frame in the kitchen today, which gave me a handy excuse to finally call my landlady to come down to the house and see it for herself.  Nothing like seeing a couple hundred (or more) miniature ants to get her to agree to call an exterminator -- she already knows I've been treating the ant swarms myself all summer to tamp them down, but as I explained to her, they've come back a few times too many and I've finally reached my limit.

In baseball news, the Cardinals walked off today for the second game in a row (last night it was Matt Holliday; today it was Brendan Ryan who did the honors), and their magic number is now down to 4.  Good work, boys!  Now Boston needs to follow suit.  They're just underway, and Baltimore has already scored, but the evening is young so I'm not wringing my hands.

And now...back to the game.  And dinner.

If you blink you'll miss me.

coco hello?

Howdy howdy howdy...just stopping by to let folks know that I'm still alive.

Late this afternoon I start working with the professional declutterer for real.  I had a delayed reaction to the cleaning I did over the weekend, probably from tracking dust and mold all over the house, and folks have given me a few extra ideas about keeping that from happening again.  I think my lungs have recovered sufficiently that I'm good to go.  She's supposed to arrive at 5:30, and we'll probably work for at least a couple of hours.  After that, it'll be into the shower for a good scrubbing, and then finally I can have dinner, but I probably won't get much done beyond that.  If I'm really lucky I'll get to reply to my growing pile of LJ comments and PMs.

I don't anticipate getting to watch much baseball, needless to say.  I was lucky enough to have the Cardinals on last night while plowing through a bunch of housework -- Julio had a triple that brought in two runs, then Albert brought him home.  I just LOVE when my boys work in tandem.   :::hearts:::   Hopefully more of the same will occur tonight, as well as a good showing from my Boston boys.  I'll have time to enjoy them all again soon enough.

That's it for now -- I have a bunch of work that I should be doing, so I'd best get to it.

YIKES!

Has it really been a week since I've posted?  I think that's my longest hiatus since I've been on LJ.  It's been one of those weeks, though.   Just so much going on that I hardly know where to start.

Cut because I'm feeling talkative... )

My stomach is rumbling so I will (mercifully) stop writing and go fix dinner, after which it's time to tackle a good-sized backlog of e-mails.  Thank goodness for the holiday weekend so I don't have to try to do them all at once!

Just another driveby...

Last night was a whirlwind -- I worked late, then grocery shopped and didn't get home until after 8:00.  When I looked at the score and thought about how much I needed to get done (cook dinner and a bunch of organizational stuff) before bed, I decided just this once to bag watching the game.  Silly me -- when I checked in on Gameday later on, there was Nicky...PITCHING?!?!?  I really didn't have time to log in and deal with my computer's crankiness as far as getting the media player working, so opted to watch the recap videos this morning.  Great job by the hammerhead!  Furthermore, he has now upped his value to the club with his megasuperutilityness.

Also, here's hoping that Jacoby recovers quickly from last night's sliding mishap.  I'd like to see him set the season steals bar a little bit higher, actually...much higher.

Meanwhile, here in Asheville, it's not looking good for live baseball tonight.  We're in a nasty weather pattern and tonight's forecast calls for a 70% chance of rain and T-storms.  But my brother-in-law, ever the optimist, told me that he'll decide by 5:00 this afternoon and let me know whether the pilgrimage to McCormick Field is still on.  If the weather doesn't break, of course, it'll be a moot point.  After all, last night's game was postponed...but just the same, I brought a comfy baseball shirt and other ballpark-necessary items to work with me.

A few square feet at a time...

I'm posting this to remind myself how well I'm doing with decluttering after slacking off for at least a couple of weekends.

I can see more of my bedroom floor now! )

Time to reward myself with baseball!  The Cardinals game starts in just a few minutes, and with both Julio and Albert in the lineup tonight I'll certainly be checking that out on MLB.tv.  The Red Sox are on MLBN a little later, so I'll be watching that as well.  Guess I'll burn some calories dashing back and forth between kitchen and bedroom.

I hope all of my buddies had an excellent Saturday.  Much love!

Always a thrill!

Huge and hearty congratulations to Mark Buehrle on his perfect game!  This sort of stuff never gets old.  And you know it's something special when it's reported in as "breaking news" in large font with yellow highlighting on the top of the CNN home page!

Also, a warm welcome to the two newest folks on my f-list, [info]iammystery_girl and [info]hanachan01 -- I'm really delighted to have both of you here.

I know my posts have been uncharacteristically short lately.  That's mainly because there's not much going on around here and things are pretty much status quo.  I did have a little misunderstanding with my closest coworker over who is taking time off when during the Christmas holidays (yeah, we're having to figure it out in July!), but fortunately we got it straightened out.  I'm feeling better than I was earlier in the week, and things will improve even more if I can sleep well tonight.  I had baseball boyfriends on the brain last night and thus a bit of insomnia, but I'm going to swat all those pretty thoughts firmly away tonight because I've got one more work day to get through...

That's it for now, y'all.  More brain draining medical chart work awaits.

Just wondering.

This question is for anyone who has ever sent fan mail.  If I send fan mail to a ballplayer, how long do you think it takes until they actually receive it?  I'm discounting mail transit time from here to the home office.  How long does it take from that point until it reaches their hot little hands?

More later, as I haven't posted for a few days.  For now, I'm holding down my department solo today and had best get back to it.

Attempting to break my string of failhattery where posting is concerned, I’m checking in from work during one of my office’s traditionally quiet Wednesday afternoons (quiet because most of our docs are in classes, and therefore the workload is diminished).

It amazes me to look out the window at the drizzle and realize that it was so brilliantly sunny yesterday (and in the 70s, too!) that I was awakened by the light around 7:30 and had to blindfold myself in order to fall back to sleep.  Tired as I was, I actually slept until 11:00 after that, and proceeded to wear a FAILHAT for the rest of the day as far as getting anything done, largely because I wasn't feeling all that great (migraine and cramps).  Middle-aged hormones for the fail!

This, of course, means that I have to buckle down today.  I'll be heading to the laundromat shortly, having realized (much to my chagrin) that if I hope to maintain some semblance of productivity in the coming months, it means that I can't necessarily watch every single Sox game.  So it goes.  At least I'm listening to the beginning of today's game.  Note that I would have already finished said laundry were it not for the irresistible urge to a) sleep in a bit this morning and b) lie around thinking pretty thoughts (oh, my darling Baseball Boyfriends, how you charm me and divert my attention, you rascals!).

Nice little win streak we've got going right now.  I'm loving this turnaround and hope it continues.  Lester looks great so far today.  And golly, it cracks me up when these fans read the lineup on TV and call all the players "Mr."  Also...too funny, the hurting that Cleveland put on the Yankees yesterday.  I need to make time to watch that second inning, man.  It must have been epic!

Amusing things... )

Okay...on to the laundromat.  I hope to make some progress on e-mails and comment replies later on (I absolutely hate it when I can't keep up with that).  So...you folks who I've been neglecting can (hopefully) expect to hear from me soon.

Ciao!

Hey all, I realize that I totally fail at keeping up with my journal!  It's been a pretty wild week of ups and downs.

Okay, I had better get this proofread and posted before some random power surge knocks me off line (this is why my mood is "rushed").  See y'all later.

misc baseball bats and gloves

Hey all!  I'm feeling a bit scattered at the moment because there are so many things demanding my attention, but it's mostly in a good way.  I caught last night's Opening Day ATL/PHI game from about the 6th inning on, with the delay due to a call from a friend who I needed to catch up with, and then I whacked my left kneecap but good while getting up from the table.  There was actually a dent in it, and for a moment I thought it was broken, but I *immediately* downed a couple of ibuprofen, then spent the rest of the game lying on the bed with an ice pack on it.  Although I've got a bit of a bruise today, to my surprise it's not all that sore and I can move it just fine.  What a relief.

I know lots of folks around Red Sox Nation were disappointed about today's rainout, but really? Putting it off until late tomorrow afternoon means that I'll be able to watch the tail end of the game, and I'm pretty excited about that!  I finally ordered my MLB.tv Premium sub yesterday so am ready to go.

Speaking of inclement weather, y'all New Englanders can take comfort in the fact that you're not having OUR weather...we're supposed to have 2-4" of snow by the end of tomorrow.  April snow isn't unheard of here, or even May snow, for that matter, but it was into the mid-70s yesterday and I was so very much enjoying the cherry trees around town and the violets and dandelions in the yard, and they may not look nearly as pretty if we have the hard freeze that the weather folks are predicting.

Other than that, I'm sitting here awaiting the start of the NCAA Championship Game, and what more can I say other than GO HEELS!!!

A little of this and a little of that.

I got up at 7:30 this morning and it actually felt good to do that (as opposed to dragging myself out of bed kicking and screaming at 10:30 or so). I watched the young day out the window while enjoying the quiet and my morning coffee and, of course, a little bit of Internet play. My tire excursion was pretty pleasant thanks to quick service and a very nice proprietress who chatted with me while the work was being done, and the price was decent. I came home in plenty of time to watch the game. The MLB.tv player worked fine today, only freezing up once, and I was able to get right back on. Around the 6th inning [info]lovinbecks19 (Bethie) called me and we gabbed for the rest of the game, after which I cooked up some ground beef and made a large platter of tacos and burritos (this is getting to be a pattern), only because I was so hungry that I couldn't wait long enough to boil up a pot of pasta. I later watched the tail end of UConn/Michigan State. My deepest condolences to all you UConn fans out there. I was in tears myself by the end of it. Right now the UNC/Villanova game has just started, and I fully expect to be a quivering mess by the time all is said and done. GO HEELS!

The quick and dirty...

Hey all, this is just a driveby to keep y'all updated.  In short:

1.  My mom had minor throat surgery yesterday to remove a wayward gland (the parathyroid, in case anyone is interested) that was messing with her blood chemistry.  The condition runs in the family and I had the same surgery a couple of years ago, only her case was a bit more complicated than mine so she ended up staying in the hospital overnight.  She's home now (with help from her significant other) and is doing just fine.

2.  My cousin Danielle lost her job yesterday.  She hated working there but hey, in this economy any job will do, especially one with health insurance.  She's not sure why they let her go...the reason they gave appeared to be a flimsy excuse.  Anyway, she's devastated, so any kind thoughts and good vibes sent her way would be appreciated.

3.  My damned ankle is acting up again.  You know the drill by now.  I'm going to bed in a few minutes with my ibuprofen and a pillow to prop the leg up.  Looks like I'll be calling the doc tomorrow to see about getting some blood work done to see what freakin' inflammatory process could be causing this, because I just finished a round of STRONG antibiotics 2-1/2 weeks ago, so surely this is not another infection.   :::sigh:::

4.  On the bright side, our boys take on those guys from NY tomorrow night on MLBN!  Now THAT'S the way I like to end the week   :::happy dance:::

That's it for now.

NOOOOOOO!!!!!!!

Don't get me wrong, I love Cinderella stories, but why the fuck did it have to come at the expense of the Dominican?

That said, it was a hell of a game.
