That pretty much describes it, doesn't it? My f-list is already way ahead of me on posting about the superlatives of the evening, but I thought I'd at least post SOMETHING, seeing as how tonight's game was the very first no-hitter that I have ever heard as it happened -- I was not lucky enough to see it live, but thanks to Gameday I will watch the archived game ASAP (just not tonight). I already watched the highlight reel of all 27 outs and cried all over again.
What a performance by Jon Lester. I can't say much that hasn't already been posted by so many others who are better than I am at recaps. One stat that caught my eye was that the last time this was done by a LHP for the Sox was a couple of years before I was born (in other words, it's been a helluva long time). Kudos to Tek for catching a major league record fourth no-no. Oh yeah, and he hit a HR while he was at it. Major props to Jacoby for a spectacular diving catch without which all the combined heroics of the battery would have been a moot point.
I was over at Texy's site during the game, hanging out on the live thread, and it was quite the gathering. As the game wore on the cardinal rule of "not talking about it" came into play, with many stern reminders from Ian (Sox & Dawgs). We collectively agreed to watch the top of the 9th in total silence and, speaking strictly for me but I'm sure I was not alone, my silence was punctuated only by the blood pounding furiously in my ears and the sniffles as I struggled to hold back the tears. When the final strikeout came, I cried for real. What a moment for Jon Lester and the rest of the guys, for Red Sox fans and really for baseball fans everywhere. To me there's nothing quite like baseball history, and I feel very privileged to have once again witnessed it as it happened.
And now, as sleeping after all this excitement is going to be difficult, I am taking my very sore back to bed. With a smile on my tired face.
